AtomStack’s older machines were caught quoting electrical input as if it were optical output — one unit sold as “20W” metered at 4.5W. This is the Sculpfun to buy if you are buying one Sculpfun. The reason is not the spec sheet — plenty of machines claim 33W — but the fact that someone checked. In the only public instrumented test of a Sculpfun, Hobby Laser Cutters read almost 34W on a 33W claim and watched it out-cut the Atomstack, Longer and Acmer machines in its class by two to four passes on 18mm spruce. On 36mm stock the gap stopped being a matter of degree: the Sculpfun finished in about 12 passes and the other three never got through.

The 590×595mm bed is the second reason. That is large enough for full cutting-board blanks and mid-size signs without the extension kit, and if you do outgrow it the XY expansion takes it to 935×905mm — though note Sculpfun’s own product page warns that the expansion needs a separate adapter cable that does not ship with the kit.

The honest downsides are structural. This is an open-frame machine, so laser goggles, a fume path to outside and a fire-safe surface are mandatory purchases rather than optional ones — budget $60 to $150 on top. Class 1 means the machine is safe to run with the lid closed and no eyewear, which is the single thing that decides whether a laser can live in a spare room rather than a garage. Combined with the built-in HEPA and carbon filtration, it is the only Sculpfun you can set up on a desk in an apartment and use the same afternoon.

3DWithUS put it through a full hands-on and its results were unambiguous — clean cuts in 3mm and 5mm plywood, good engraving on leather, slate and an anodised aluminium card, and a successful stainless dog tag once the 1.2W infrared module was fitted. Its verdict: “the combination of user-friendly features, solid performance, and versatile material compatibility makes the iCube Ultra a very capable laser engraver.”

Its two criticisms are the ones to weigh. The 150×150mm bed is small, and the machine ships without a reversible honeycomb — 3DWithUS wanted one “for better airflow and cutting performance.” Curved objects needed magnets to hold focus. None of that is a defect; it is the price of the enclosure at this money. If you engrave coasters, keyrings, tags and jewellery, the bed is fine. If you engrave signs, it is not — go to the E1 Pro below.

The C1 is how you find out whether you actually like this hobby for the price of a nice dinner. Three watts is not a cutting laser — think thin card and veneer at best — but the 0.04mm spot is finer than what you get on most 20W machines, and fine spot is what decides whether an engraved photo or a small logo looks crisp. On wood, leather, slate, painted metal and anodised aluminium it produces work that is genuinely sellable at craft-fair scale.

It also arrives assembled, which matters more than it sounds. The most common reason a first laser gets abandoned is not power, it is a half-built gantry that never squared up properly. The C1 skips that entirely.

The E1 Pro is what the iCube Ultra becomes when you need a real bed. Same Class 1 safety story — enclosed, interlocked, no goggles with the lid down — but with roughly 400×400mm to work in and 21W instead of 12W, which is the difference between engraving small objects and cutting 12mm wood.

There is a genuine piece of arithmetic buried in this product line that Sculpfun does not point out. The standard E1 is $499 with a 12W diode, and its dual version with the 3W infrared module is $949 — so the IR module costs $450 there, matching the $449 the standalone IR3 module sells for. On the E1 Pro, the single is $849 and the dual is $1,149, so the identical IR module costs $300. The result: the E1 Pro Dual is only $200 more than the E1 Dual and gives you 21W instead of 12W. If you want infrared at all, buy it on the Pro.

The E1 Pro’s weakness is the one every enclosed machine shares — you are paying roughly $350 over an equivalent open-frame machine for the box. The SF-A9 is the clearest illustration of the Sculpfun store problem, and also the best deal in the range while it lasts. In July 2026 four listings for the 20W were live simultaneously: $499.00 on a US clearance page, $549.00 for the China-shipped clearance variant, $628.99 as a LightBurn bundle, and $799.99 as a honeycomb-and-rotary bundle. Same engraver. A buyer who arrives via a search result rather than the clearance page pays $130 to $300 more for nothing.

At $499 it is a straightforward recommendation for anyone who wants real cutting power in an open frame and does not need the S30 Ultra’s larger bed. Hobby Laser Cutters reviewed the SF-A9 favourably on launch, and the two features Sculpfun bothered to engineer here are the right ones: a heat-pipe radiator instead of a fan-on-a-block, which keeps output stable on hour-long cuts, and a tilt sensor that kills the beam if the frame is knocked past 15°.

The 40W version at $799.99 adds lever-operated 40W/20W switching. The lower setting is not a limp mode — it produces a tighter beam, so you drop to 20W for fine engraving and go back to 40W to cut. That single feature is why the A-series is a better buy than a fixed-power machine of the same wattage.

These two are the same machine at two power levels, and the choice between them is simply how much you cut. The 830×800mm bed is close to CO2 territory for area — big enough for full sign blanks, cabinet panels and batch layouts of dozens of coasters in one job — and at 36,000mm/min the engraving itself is fast enough that job setup becomes the bottleneck.

Note the naming trap here, because it costs people money: the S40 MAX is a 48W machine and the S70 MAX is a 70W machine. The number in the model name is not the wattage on the S40, and the $500 gap between the two buys you 22 more watts, not 30.

The realistic caveat is that a 980×1000mm open frame is a metre square of bench that has to be somewhere with ventilation. Nobody buys one of these for a spare bedroom. This is the only Sculpfun that properly engraves bare metal. The rule is worth stating plainly because a lot of money gets wasted on it: blue diodes at 455nm mark coated and anodised metal, and only a 1064nm infrared or fiber source marks bare metal. No amount of diode wattage changes that. The A9 Ultra solves it by carrying both sources on one gantry — a 20W fiber for metal, and a diode that switches between 40W for cutting and 20W for detail.

At $1,699 for the dual build it is not cheap, but the comparison is not against other diode machines; it is against buying a diode engraver and a separate fiber marker, which starts around $2,500 for the pair and costs you two machines’ worth of bench. The fiber-only configuration at $1,149 makes sense if you already have a diode you are happy with.

Two practical points. The fiber module focuses via an external controller rather than through the main software, which is a mild workflow annoyance rather than a real problem. The wattage is trustworthy, which is not normal here. The one Sculpfun that has been metered read above its claim.
